Do I have to install Wordpress in my hosting accounts root directory, or can I install it in a sub-directory (e.g. /blog/)?
No, you don't HAVE TO install Wordpress in your hosting accounts root directory. You can install it in any directory (sub-directory), you'd like.
Here's a tip though, if you're install Wordpress in a sub-directory, make sure you use a main keyword for that topic as the directory folder name. This way you will get better SEO for your blog (example: http://www.yourdomain.com/marketing/ <= this would be a good marketing blog directory).

I can't get my permalinks to work - I changed the settings but nothing changed on my blog?
This is a common thing. What you need to do is FTP into you domains hosting account and go into your root directory (most likely something like /public_html/) and select the .htaccess file. Once selected, you need to change the files permissions to 777 (world writable), then go back and submit your permalink changes again in the admin section of your Wordpress installation. After you have done this, go back to FTP and change the .htaccess file permission to something like 644 for security reason.
SIDE NOTE: For help with FTP and changing your file permission please see your FTP programs help files, or contact your hosting provider. You can also submit a support ticket with our help desk for more assistance.

What are the main things I need to do to get better SEO for my Wordpress blog?
There are three main things you should be doing to see better SEO for any blog you have...
- Have descriptive title tags

- Focus each post on 3 to 5 main keywords, and add them to your keywords tag
This is actually easier then it sounds.
First go get the following plugin: All-In-One-SEO-Pack
After you download the plugin, install it in your Wordpress blog and activate it.
Now, with each page and post you create in Wordpress, you will see a new section that allows you to add these needed tags as you wish
